In February 2023, Wigan Council launched the £500,000 Future Apprentices for Business (FAB) grants programme. This initiative aims to help local employers attract high-quality applicants for new apprenticeship roles. So far, the FAB programme has successfully placed over 80 young people in apprenticeship roles within the Wigan Borough.
Grant Details
Businesses that recruit a local apprentice aged 16 – 24 and pay at least the National Minimum Wage for their age (not the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage) can apply for two levels of grant:
- Basic Grant: £3,000 (You can recruit any young person to your apprenticeship role using the find an apprenticeship website)
- Enhanced Grant: £5,000 (Available to businesses selecting an apprentice from the local authority’s talent pool)
Additionally, businesses can access the FAB grant in conjunction with the £1,000 employer incentive grant from the government if the apprentice is aged 16 - 18. In industries such as construction, there are also CITB grants available, which can be drawn down in addition to the FAB grant.
Benefits for Employers
These grants provide financial support to employers, making it easier to invest in young talent. By hiring through the FAB programme, businesses not only gain motivated apprentices but also benefit from the backing of Wigan Council.
Check for Similar Opportunities
If your business is located outside the Wigan area, it's worth checking with your local authority to see if similar grants are available. Many regions offer support for apprenticeship schemes, which can be a valuable resource for businesses looking to grow their workforce.
