The number of HMRC enquiries is on the rise, with taxpayers being targeted more than ever before. In addition to general aspect enquiries, the increased scrutiny of R&D tax relief claims has resulted in a surge in investigations.

The focus on R&D claims is aimed at eliminating fraudulent/invalid submissions, which HMRC estimates to have cost £469m in its most recent accounts.
